Oakes has a Masters Degree in Visual Arts from New York University and a Masters Degree in Social and Political Science from The New School for Social Research in New York.
With a dual career as an artist and writer, Oakes’ work has shown internationally at The Rivington Gallery in London, Curcio Projects in New York, Barmstaedt in Germany, The Varley Gallery of Markham Ontario, and The Canadian Museum of Northern History. Her solo exhibition Swounds opened in April at The Canadian Clay and Glass Museum.
Her work is in major collections such as The Glenbow Museum, The Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery, The Mendel Gallery, The Vernon Performing Arts Center, The AGSO, Straub Clinic in Hawaii, The Kenderdine Gallery and UBCO.
She currently resides in her studio residence in Vernon, BC. It is both a gallery and living and working space that she designed herself.
She is represented by Galerie Samuel Lallouz in Montreal, Lonsdale Gallery in Toronto, Curcio Projects in New York, Leskiw Contemporary in Antwerp, and Ashpa Naira Gallery in BC.
