After completing high school I attended The Vancouver School of Art, now known as Emily Carr, graduating from a four year course majoring in pottery and design. It was here that the pottery studio lured me in and I was hooked. My pottery instructors were a wonderful combination: Wayne Nguyn who has an Asian background in pottery, and Heinz Laffin with German training.
While living in Burnaby I was involved with pottery sales at the Burnaby Art Centre. I also taught pottery classes at the New Westminster Community Art Centre, until moving to Victoria where I set up another studio selling my work to several retail outlets. In 1975 I moved to Vernon setting up a home studio once again. In addition to selling at Creative Chaos and numerous individual art sales, I became one of the 16 founding members of the cooperative “The Galloping Goose” which was on 30th Avenue: a well known Artisan outlet which was in business for a number of years. During this time I was also involved in pottery instruction in the early years of Summer School of the Arts for children and teaching pottery classes at the Army Camp through the City of Vernon.
After this I took a number of years away from playing with clay and closed my studio at home. I never thought I would get back to pottery again until my husband encouraged me to go to the clay studio at the Vernon Community Arts Centre. I am involved with clay once again with great enthusiasm. The clay studio is so well equipped and the wonderfully creative people that I have met have been so inspiring. I now have a shared position as Clay Studio Technition which I am thoroughly enjoying. I plan to be involved with clay for many years to come and am now operating as “WhataHoot Pottery”.
