Wonderful Woodblocks Talk

Vernon Community Arts Centre 2704a Highway 6, Vernon, BC

Join us during BC Culture Days and learn about the art of Japanese printmaking.

Adrian, a fan of woodblock printing, will share some of his favourite prints and some history during a 30 minute artist talk. Mainly focusing on works from Japan, he will touch on the well-known Ukiyo (which includes Hokusai and Hiroshige), but dive deeper into the 20th century Shin Hanga, Sosaku Hanga, & Meiji eras.  Adrian will close the talk with a view of some of the woodblock prints from Vienna of the same time.  What he lacks in academic art knowledge is made up in enthusiasm.

This fun and fact filled evening will be held at the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Wednesday, September 27th between 7:30-8:00pm, with time for questions afterwards.

Donations are welcomed and will support future community arts programming.

The Old Vernon Potter – Axel Ebring Pottery Exhibit

Vernon Community Arts Centre 2704a Highway 6, Vernon, BC

View works from the late Axel Ebring, in a special exhibit entitled the Old Vernon Potter.

Ebring was born in Kalmar Sweden in 1874, and immigrated to Canada at the age of 12. After years of labouring in farming, prospecting, and mining, he established a pottery studio in Notch Hill, near Salmon Arm, in the 1920's. He later moved his operation to Vernon where he would remain until his passing in 1954. Ebring is one of Canada's pioneer potters, and is known primarily for his functional, wood-fired earthenware including bowls, vases and jugs.

Collections of Ebring's pottery have been preserved by Vernon Museum, Vernon Public Art Gallery, RJ Haney Heritage Museum, and can be found in several private collections. This exhibit showcases works from the private collection of Bob Kingsmill, another very prominent Vernon Potter.

Bob will be presenting the collection in an opening reception Thursday, November 2nd, from 6-8pm. Please join us in celebrating a local legend.
