Local artists showcase what they love about the Okanagan lifestyle in this highly anticipated exhibit. Using a variety of artistic styles and mediums, they explore everything from the landscape and wildlife to their favourite pastimes and culinary delights. Featured will also be several paintings that were completed in the June Rail Trail Plein Air event hosted by the Arts Council of the North Okanagan.

Okanagan Living runs July 7 to August 1, and is open daily to the public. Hours are Mon-Thurs 9-9, Fri-Sat 9-5, Sun 12-4.

Admission is free and donations are accepted should you wish to contribute to future community arts programming.

Awakening the Spirit

The Vernon Community Arts Centre is proud to welcome back The Canadian Mental Health Association and the 20th Annual Awakening the Spirit Art Show & Sale, celebrating the creative talents of people living with mental illness.

Art has a therapeutic quality that has proven to benefit the mental health of individuals. Artwork on display is from those living with mental illness who have used art to improve their mental health positively. We hope to break down some of the barriers and stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness through art and creativity. 

Awakening the Spirit runs August 3 to 22nd, and is open daily to the public. Hours are Mon-Thurs 9-9, Fri-Sat 9-5, Sun 12-4. An opening reception will be held Thursday, August 3rd from 5:30 to 8:30pm

Admission is free and donations are accepted should you wish to contribute to future community programming.

Fresh Perspectives – Youth Art Exhibit

We love this exhibit and know you will to!  Each year, the Vernon Community Arts Centre showcases the work of emerging artists, ages 5 to 25. As they title indicates, their ideas are always fresh and they often take a different perspective into their art practice and finished pieces.  Fresh Perspectives will run daily from August 24 to September 10th, and will also coincide with our 2023 Youth Artist in Residence Exhibit.  Come down and support Vernon's young creatives.

Encouraging Ability In The Arts

Joining Hands assists and provides adults living with disabilities varied opportunities to explore and develop their artistic abilities. The project accommodates beginner, emerging and established artists, giving them the opportunity to be a part of something tangible in their community through artistic and creative expression.

Glass Beadmaking Demonstration

Join the Vernon Community Arts Centre at the Sundog Festival and watch local artist Patricia Doyle, dance with the flame! Patricia will be using a torch to turn rods of Italian glass into glass beads and 'squiggles and wiggles'. If you've ever considered taking one of Patricia's classes, but haven't yet signed up, this demo will have you in the studio in no time!

Join us during BC Culture Days for a fun pottery demonstration!

See Sabrina Boulay, a visiting ceramic artist, while she works on a large scale coil pot. Coiling pottery was one of the primary potting methods prior to the development of pottery wheels. Coil pots are sturdy in large forms and have been used for thousands of years across the globe.

Demonstrations will be held at the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Sunday, September 24th between 12:30-1:30pm, and Monday, September 25th, 4:30-5:30pm.

Donations are welcomed and will support future community arts programming.

Handmade Journal Demonstration

Celebrate Culture Days and come for a FREE demonstration on how to create handbound books that can be used for journals, sketchbooks, or zines. Silmara will demonstrate the basics of bookbinding using tools and papers you already have around your home.

Wonderful Woodblocks Talk

Join us during BC Culture Days and learn about the art of Japanese printmaking.

Adrian, a fan of woodblock printing, will share some of his favourite prints and some history during a 30 minute artist talk. Mainly focusing on works from Japan, he will touch on the well-known Ukiyo (which includes Hokusai and Hiroshige), but dive deeper into the 20th century Shin Hanga, Sosaku Hanga, & Meiji eras.  Adrian will close the talk with a view of some of the woodblock prints from Vienna of the same time.  What he lacks in academic art knowledge is made up in enthusiasm.

This fun and fact filled evening will be held at the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Wednesday, September 27th between 7:30-8:00pm, with time for questions afterwards.

Screen Printing Experience

Join us for a fun & FREE printmaking activity.

Unleash your creativity and explore the world of screen printing. In celebration of Culture Days, and Vernon's new Sundog Festival, we'll be using the Sundog logo for our design. Please bring a cotton or cotton blend t-shirt, tote bag or bandana that you want to the imprint the design on.  We will then guide you step by step through the screen-printing process. Be prepared to take your creation away wet. When it dries the next day, you can iron it to set the print and enjoy! No preregistration necessary.

Drop into the Vernon Community Arts Centre on Monday, October 2nd, between 11:00 and 2:00 to make your own Sundog Festival creation!
