Oakes has a Masters Degree in Visual Arts julie_oakes_photofrom New York University and a Masters Degree in Social and Political Science from The New School for Social Research in New York.. With a dual career as an artist and writer; Oakes’ work has shown internationally, at The Rivington Gallery, London, Curcio Projects, New York, Barmstaedt, Germany, The Varley Gallery of Markham Ontario, The Canadian Museum of Northern History. Her solo exhibition Swounds opened in April at The Canadian Clay and Glass Museum.
Her work is in major collections such as The Glenbow Museum, The Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery, The Mendel Gallery, The Vernon Performing Arts Center, The AGSO, Straub Clinic, Hawaii, The Kenderdine Gallery and UBCO.
She currently resides in her studio residence in Vernon, BC, a gallery. Living and working space that she designed.
